Training and Education

Vocational Training (VT)

Vocational Training is the training new dental graduates receive, working on a salaried basis in a clinical setting.  VT is managed by the Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors (COPDEND) on a regional basis.  For more information, including Deanery contact details, click here to visit the COPDEND website.

DH Factsheet: Competency training for dentists who have not undertaken vocational training

DH have produced a factsheet providing guidance on the application of provisions within the NHS (Performer Lists) Regulations to dentists who have not completed vocational training but have gained experience of providing primary care services as a dentist. (Many of these dentists will be from countries outside the European Economic Area who have passed the General Dental Council's International Qualifying Examination or Overseas Registration Examination.)

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

DCPs and Dentists are required to undertake CPD as part of their registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).  The CPD cycle runs over a five year period, starting on different dates depending on the date of the dentist or DCP's registration with the GDC.  Dentists must undertake  a minimum of 250 hours of CPD (of which 75 hours must be verifiable CPD) over the five year cycle.  DCPs must undertake a minimu of 150 hours of CPD (of which 50 hour must be verifiable CPD).  More information can be obtained from the GDC website (click here to visit the GDC website).

National Clinical Assessment Service

The National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS), part of the National Patient Safety Agency, has been commissioned to undertake assessments of dentists' performance by the GDC as part of the Council's new procedures to tackle poor performance in dentistry.
