Balanced scorecards

As world class commissioners, PCTs have a responsibility to ensure the highest quality of service to their local population across all areas of primary care contracting. The PCT will need to spend time developing both its strategic and operational priorities to ensure improved quality of service, access and cost effectiveness, and to allow for innovative commissioning according to local need.

Balanced scorecards (sometimes referred to as quality scorecards or performance frameworks) can be used to identify exemplars in developing high quality services and ensure equitable and cost effective service provision for all patients.

Hertfordshire PCTs
The Hertfordshire PCTs scorecard gradings are based on a ‘traffic-light’ system displaying individual practice performance versus a defined target, generally either the nationally accepted target or a comparison versus the average PCT level. A more concise public version of the scorecard results is also made available on the websites of the PCTs. The most recent version takes into account the Primary Care Commissioning Support Application and other recently developed PCTs Scorecards, especially the SW Essex model, and includes trends, additional data from the GP Patient Survey and a one page practice profile, with graphs for clearer illustration. Internal and public scorecard and practice profile available to download here.
