Built environment policy

The agenda for the built environment is being developed around three main strands: consumerism, design quality and sustainability.

The criteria for design quality and sustainability are set out in two toolkits developed for the NHS, AEDET and NEAT respectively.

The consumerism agenda has updated the capital cost allowances to allow more space in healthcare premises. The emphasis is on addressing patients' needs for privacy and dignity and creating non-institutional environments.

This section describes the impact of these initiatives on primary and social care premises.
