Disposal of waste optical drugs
Some PCTs have been asked by their pharmacies whether the pharmacy is allowed to accept unwanted or out of date drugs from local optical practices. As this is outside of the NHS terms of service any such drugs that are accepted should not be disposed of via the PCT’s collection and disposal service. PCTs and pharmacies may like to note that there is no obligation on pharmacies to accept such drugs.

Pharmacies are required to dispose of unwanted drugs in certain circumstances. This briefing will assist PCTs in understanding the terms of service requirements and the arrangements they need to put in place.
