First pharmacist independent prescribers qualify

Following the introduction of independent prescribing by pharmacists in May 2006, the first members of that profession have completed the necessary training and registration. They are now able to prescribe independently within their areas of competence. This includes any licensed medicine, with the exception of controlled drugs.

This makes pharmacist independent prescribing a reality and opens up new opportunities to re-design services and for health professional teams to combine their skills for the benefit of both patients and the service. A DH guide for employers and prescribers [insert link] supports implementation of these changes.
