For some time Northamptonshire PCT has recognised the need for a transparent performance assessment and benchmarking system in primary care, which identifies those practices that need a greater PCT focus for development, and those high performing practices that should be recognised or rewarded in some way. Our belief was that practices needed to know increasingly what the PCT, as their commissioner, considered to be important deliverables, in order that they could respond accordingly.
Northamptonshire PCT's balanced scorecard has been developed on an Excel spreadsheet and by using drop down menus we can identify the performance of any practice on a quarterly basis. Each practice's performance is then automatically fed in to a summary report for the trust board.
