The weekly news bulletin from your world class commissioning partner

Insight of the week

Practitioners with Special Interests (PwSI)

PCTs should ensure that all existing PwSI have been re-accredited by 31 March 2009 and that any new PwSI is accredited in line with the guidance issued in April 2007 (Implementing Care Closer To Home: Convenient Quality Care For Patients). This can be found here.

Guidance and competencies for the provision of services using practitioners with special interests have been published here.

There is also a network with links to documents, discussion forums and FAQs at NHS Networks, here.

Stroke campaign gets underway

The Department of Health has launched a three-year campaign to promote public awareness around stroke.

Stroke, a loss of brain function due to a clot or bleed in the brain, is the third leading cause of death and the single largest cause of adult disability in England. Improving public awareness of the signs of stroke is a key element of the government's national stroke strategy published in December 2007.

Learning disability DES support materials published

The first of several documents in support of the learning disability DES are available on the PCC site. The letter to chief executives of PCTs and councils is here.

Benchmarking primary care medical services - data submissions now due

PCC's collaborative project with the NHS Benchmarking Network continues to progress well with data submissions now arriving from large numbers of PCTs. PCTs can still access support and guidance on data interpretation and collection issues. We have also updated the project's question and answer briefing for questions received in the last week. This includes a range of questions across all areas of the study including some important guidance on how to assess the costs of the various primary care medical services contracts.

All project enquiries should be directed to Steve Watkins on 0161 266 2046 or by email on s.watkins@nhs.net

The updated project Q&A is here.

March benchmarking event to showcase results

NHS PCC and NHS Benchmarking will hold a full day event on 26 March to present initial results of the benchmarking project. The subscriber-only event will be of interest to PCT board directors, primary care leads, primary care commissioners and WCC commissioning leads. A venue will be announced shortly.

Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment update

Further guidance is available to PCTs on the transition from the old control of entry regime to the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment. The update is available here.

Get Well Soon! - antibiotic awareness campaign

Tomorrow sees the launch of the latest phase of the Government's campaign to remind the public that antibiotics do not help to treat viral infections such as coughs, colds and a sore throat.

Campaign posters and leaflets will be re-issued to a wide variety of health professionals including public health, prison and pharmacy colleagues. Designed to reduce unnecessary requests to doctors to prescribe antibiotics and to tackle the increasing problem of antibiotic resistance, a new non-prescription pad is also being distributed. Each sheet on the pad explains why antibiotics have not been prescribed at that consultation and patients can take it away as an aide memoire. Press adverts will be appearing throughout March and April.

The campaign materials and advertisements are posted on the Department of Health website at www.dh.gov.uk/antibiotics.
